The Watch
ZAIS Watch was one of the brands registered for G.Leon Breitling SA as well as many other brands including Coco, Koco, Locarno, Nicely, Refery, and Rising Sun. Many of these chronographs were used by the German Luftwaffe during World War 2.
Here we have a 1940s Zais Watch Chronograph with a 32.5mm stainless steel case, attractive hinged/articulating lugs that hug the wrist with a lug to lug of 46mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm to ensure a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the square chronograph pushers and a large crown in the centre, a slim bezel holds a domed crystal above a faded multi-scale dial, the dial shows signs of ageing throughout but has an appealing vintage aesthetic. Around the outer edge is a Telemetre scale that measures the distance between the user and the event seen and heard, it was used to calculate when artillery fired, when you saw the flash of the shot of the artillery, you push the start button and push the stop button when the thunder of the explosion was heard. An inner 60-minute track has thick black lines marking the hours, the centre Tachymetre scale has faded over time. At 3 o’clock a 30-minute register and at 9 o’clock the small second's register completes this enchanting vintage timepiece, slim thermally blued pencil hands are complemented by a red chronograph hand each hitting its mark. At 12 o’clock we have the Zais Watch motif with “Chronographe” printed above, in the centre “Anti Magnetique”. On the reverse, a snap-off case back, inside a Manually Wound Landeron 13, 17 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour, this early column-wheel chronograph was also used by Heuer during the same time period. The watch comes fitted on a 16mm black leather strap.
Personal Note
It's not every day that you come across a wonderful 1940s Chronograph, especially one with hinged/articulating lugs that just look fantastic and really add a sense of added size on the wrist, all powered by a rarely seen Landeron movement used by some of the big boys at the time like Heuer! If you are looking for a vintage Chronograph, I'd highly recommend considering this one, especially for such a fair price!
