The Watch

Vertex was the brainchild of Claude Lyons of London born in 1885. At the age of 17, he started his involvement in the watch Industry. With the help of a £1000 loan, he set up Dreadnaught Watches in 1912. In 1915 they were producing watches for the British armed forces during WW1. In 1916 he founded Vertex Watches Ltd in both Hatton Gardens and in Switzerland. In 1927 Vertex became the exclusive importer of Movado Watches to the UK. 1938 Henry Lyons Claude's son in law joins the company. In 1940 their Hatton Gardens premises were destroyed by a Luftwaffe bomb.

1941 as a Captain in the British Army Henry was asked to create a watch suitable for the British military. 1944 saw the production of the Cal.59 W.W.W. Nav watch. Business continued successfully throughout the 50s, 60s. Sadly in 1972 due to the emergence of the Quartz revolution and the expiring of his lease in Hatton Gardens, Henry closed the Company. In 2015 Claude’s  Great Grandson Don Cochrane re-established the Company. And the rest is history as they say.

This Vertex M100B is a limited edition of 150. The original version was first used in 1944 as a military issue watch. It’s brushed 40mm round case has black DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating adding a durable layer. A polished bezel holds a flat sapphire crystal. The matte black dial has molded Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals adding height and real interest and dimension. Elegant syringe hands are lume filled and at 6 o’clock we have a sub-seconds register. At 12 o’clock in keeping with its military heritage there sits a Broad Arrow (pheon) the mark indicating British Government Issue property. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with Vertex M100B embossed across the center. Inside a Manually Wound ETA 7001 with Rhodium finish and Coats de Geneve decoration. This reliable movement is COSC Chronometer certified. Fitted on its original 20mm strap with a signed buckle.

Personal Note

Being a big fan of military watches and the "Dirty Dozen" I have always had a soft-spot for Vertex, but I really appreciate how they have gone above and beyond just recreating their infamous wristwatch... They have taken it to a whole new level by creating the essence of what the watch was, but in a truly modern way, that is exactly what this M100B is a testament to from Vertex.
