The Watch

George Wickes founded Garrard in London in 1735. Its Headquarters can be found on Albemarle Street in Mayfair. They created fine jewellery, silver and watches. Queen Victoria made them the first Crown Jeweller of the UK. They were responsible for the upkeep of the British Crown Jewels from 1843 to 2007. They are world-famous for creating America's Cup trophy in 1848. The Royal family has many crowns and tiaras made by Garrard. In 2006 they were acquired by the US equity firm Yucaipa companies. Today they have a presence all over the world including Harrods in London, bricks and mortar Jewellers in Geneva, Moscow and Hong Kong. Garrard receives commissions from many companies and organisations to provide timepieces with personalised inscriptions on them.

Here we have an elegant November 1991 Garrard with a 33.5mm 9ct Gold case. Slim tapered ugs with a lug to lug length of 39.5mm and a thickness of just 8.5mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. A flat bezel holds a domed crystal above a white dial. Elegant Italic Standard font numerals mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Slender black leaf hands are complemented by the sweeping second’s hand.

On the reverse, a snap-off case back with an Engraving for “Paul Jenkins from the Directors of Christie-Tyler PLC in appreciation 1965-1990”. Christie -Tyler PLC was a company based in South Wales making chairs and seats. The company was dissolved in November 2017. Inside a Manually Wound ETA 2801-2, 17 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm leather strap. Comes with its original Garrard presentation box, papers and original Garrard strap inside the box.

Personal Note

Engravings on watches aren't for everyone and as dealers, we often look to buy without them on or have them removed, but it seems the market is changing and more and more people are getting into having more of a personal story on their watch, an unknown story for the most part but a glimpse of life this watch had before.
