The Watch

Eska was founded in 1918 by Mr. Silvan Kocher senior and his son Erwin. Their workshop S.Kocher & Co was built in his home village of Selzach which is in the German part of Switzerland. The name is a phonetic abbreviation of Silvan Kocher ES & KA. In 1929 they expanded into Brazil and the USA. Due to this success, they moved their operations to Grenchen Switzerland in 1937. Sadly in 1947, Silvan senior passed away leaving the business to his 4 sons. The business continued to thrive, they were well known for making fine, distinctive, and sometimes extremely thin pieces using, for example, white gold during the 60s, 70s, and early 80s, developing their market share in the US, Asia, Brazil, and Australia. During this period Walter Kocher founded Royce watches primarily made for the US market. A sought after Eska is the "Amphibian 600," from the 1960s Roy Rogers singer, actor and TV host, was known and photographed wearing one; it has an unusually large 46mm bakelite bezel, and an Eska Cal. 600 automatic movement, it was also used by the French Navy. In 1987 Eska closed, but in 2019 celebrating 100 years since its foundation the company was reformed and introduced several fresh new designs.

This fine Eska in 18ct White Gold has one of the thinnest cases ever made. The round 33mm case is just 6mm thin. The lugs are elegantly designed with a petal shape that envelops the strap. A 39mm lug to lug length ensures a very comfortable fit on the wrist. The polished bezel holds a domed crystal. Its white dial has slim applied batons marking the hours. Elegant fine pencil hands complete the minimalist classic dial. On the reverse a snapback case back. Inside a Manually Wound Aurore-Villeret 423, 21 Jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. Aurore-Villeret was part of the Ebauches SA holding company alongside companies like Peseux, Valjoux, and A.Shild, they were later in 1985 dissolved and made part of the Swatch Group under ETA. Fitted on a grey suede 18mm quick release strap but the original black "Eska" signed strap is also provided.

Personal Note

When this watch came across my desk I couldn't say no, recently I've been getting in a lot of New Old Stock watches and if I can continue that, I will. This is a beautiful example and being cased in 18ct white gold only adds to the charm, also don't be put off by the size, it wears beautifully on the wrist and is a perfect dress piece.
