The Watch

Cyma was founded in 1862 by the brother’s Joseph Schwob and Theodore Schwob in the town of Le Locle, Switzerland. In 1871, Henri Sandoz established Sandoz & Cie in Le Locle. Sandoz moved to Tavannes in 1891, just North of Biel, where he manufactured highly desirable repeaters and chronographs. Sandoz soon saw the potential of Cyma forming a business relationship with the Schwob brothers and Cyma was officially registered in 1903. In 1943, Cyma unveiled its first automatic wristwatch, endowed with a 420 calibre featuring a unidirectional rotor. In 1966, the ASUAG Chronos Holding and production company was bought, and production continued under their Synchron group in 1968. Cyma became a sister company to Doxa and Ernest Borel throughout the 1970s. The company is currently owned by Stelux International Ltd, Hong Kong holding firm that invests in jewellery and watches.

Our New Old Stock 1960s CYMA by Synchron 38.002.53 has a 33mm round stainless steel case. The case gently curves towards the stubby lugs with a lug to lug length of 38.5mm and a thickness of just 7mm ensuring a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side, a signed crown. A fine polished bezel holds a flat crystal above the black dial. Thin applied baton indexes mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window. Slender baton hands complete this elegant minimalist dress watch. On the reverse, a snap-off case back with its original sticker in place. Inside a  Manually Wound Peseux 7001, 17 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. This ultra-thin movement has been used as a base for Omega and NOMOS as well as many others. The watch comes fitted on a quick-release 18mm leather strap.

Personal Note

A perfect dress watch for someone who doesn't want to spend a fortune but still turn up with a serious talking piece on their wrist, this incredible vintage watch provides exactly that! Perfectly proportioned to go under a cuff and under the radar without drawing attention, but with a brand and history that any watch interested person out there will definitely be drawn to!
