Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no original Avia box or original Avia paperwork. The watch comes paired on a new WatchGecko strap which matches the watch perfectly. The watch is sold in worn/vintage condition and shows signs of age as you can see from the photos, the bezel has faded to a near blue in certain lights, the dial has turned a yellow/golden tone with marks, overall it is what is known as patina'd, be your own judge on whether you like this or not. The watch has been serviced and comes with a 6-month non-waterproof warranty.

The Watch

Avia watch company was founded in 1887 by H. V. Degoumois in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. During the 1950s and 60s, Avia was well known for their variety of mechanical watches. Including sports chronographs. In 1968, Avia became part of a consortium of 6 watch manufacturers including Invicta and Sandoz, and it was this consortium that developed the very first quartz digital watch having an LCD display. This new watch appeared for the first time on 6 March 1972 at the Basel watch fair. In 2001 the Fossil Group purchased Avia and is still producing watches today.

This 1960s Avia Marino Diver style chronograph has a 38mm all stainless steel case with tapered lugs that curve at an angle making it a comfortable fit. Both polished sides and brushed top edges transition effortlessly. Pushers and crown are found on the right side. A friction fit bezel with 60-minute markings complete with lume pip at 12 o’clock. Acrylic crystal sits above a silver dial. Tachymeter outer track. Cube indexes with lume strip through the centre mark the hours, the chronograph consists of a 30-minute register at 3 o’clock and a continuous 60-second register at 9 o’clock with concentric circle patterning that creates a nicely balanced dial. Baton hands with polished edges have the fly-back chronograph seconds hand completing the set. A screw-down case back with 20ATM engraved in the centre. Inside we have a Manual wind Landeron Cal.248 17 Jewels beating at 18000 beats per minute. Fitted on a pale tan WatchGecko strap.

Personal Note

This is one from the personal collection for me, I had enjoyed it for a long time but with increasingly getting more and more stock in for sale I had to let this one go too. The patina is what drew me, the fading of the bezel, the dial fading to its colour, the overall condition fitting with the look. It is a great looking watch and an incredibly fair price for such a great looking vintage manually wound chronograph.
