The Watch

Here we have a 2023 Longines HydroConquest 41 Green L3.781.4.05.9 with a 41mm satin-brushed stainless steel case, thick curved lugs hug the wrist for a comfortable fit, and a lug-to-lug length of 50.5mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown protected by large crown guards. The unidirectional dive bezel has an outer edge of deep knurling and a green scratch-resistant ceramic dive insert with faux patina cream-coloured inverted triangle and numeral markings. A flat sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides sits above a matte black textured dial. An outer minute track with applied disc indexes and large 12, 6 and 9 numerals coated in faux patina cream-coloured Super LumiNova marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. An hour hand with diamond cut shape detailing alongside a slender minute hand tipped with faux patina cream coloured Super-LumiNova luminance complimented with a lollipop second hand. Text is precisely applied to the dial with the Longines motif at 12 o’clock and at 6 o’clock “Automatic 30bar(300 metre). On the reverse, a screw-down case back has the embossed Longines motif in the centre and the details of the watch engraved around its outer edge, inside an automatic Longines Cal. L888, 21 jewels, 25,200 beats per hour, based on the ETA 2892-A2. The watch comes fitted on its 21mm polished and brushed stainless steel bracelet with a double folding clasp and dive extension, all links are provided, plus a 21mm NATO strap and also comes with its Longines presentation box, spring bar removal tool, swing tag and papers.

Personal Note

The HydroConquest has been a staple among the Longines line-up for many years and the latest iterations of the reference have been incredible, this 41mm Green Bezel is the perfect example featuring warm faux-patina which works perfectly against the textured black dial. If you have been after a Swiss dive watch that is reasonably priced, this is one to seriously consider picking up.

The Brand

Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz and is considered to be the oldest registered watch brand. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became pioneers in mechanised production. In 1880 the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher the calibre 13.33z was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier for the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula One in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH who owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG who owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
