The Watch

Citizen founded the Shokosha Watch Research Institute in 1918, the name originates from a pocket watch produced in 1924. The Mayor of Tokyo, Mr Shimpei Goto, named the watch "CITIZEN", in the hopes the watch would become a worldwide success, in 1930 the name Citizen Watch Company was introduced. In 1959, Citizen launched Japan’s first fully waterproof watch, the Parawater. During the “quartz crisis” they developed the Eco-Drive movement in 1976, this was one of the first solar-powered watches on the market. Continuing to innovate and expand its reach In 1993, Citizen introduced the world’s first multi-band atomic watch, it uses Atomic clocks around the world to synchronise to within two nanoseconds per day. Citizens make the cases, the dial, the hands, and the movement in their Iida factory in Japan and today the Citizen Group owns brands such as Alpina, Arnold & Son.

Here we have a 2022 Citizen Promaster Auto Full Lume NY0155-58X with a 44mm matte brushed black PVD coated case, the curve of the case makes for a comfortable fit and a lug-to-lug length of 49.8mm and a case thickness of 12.7mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. Nicknamed “Fugu” which means “pufferfish” in Japanese, and is due to the watch’s dive bezel that has smooth and grooved edges resembling the dual textures found on a pufferfish. At 4 o’clock a screw-down crown is protected by crown guards with knurling for extra grip and signed with the Promaster logo, the 120-click unidirectional dive bezel has smooth and grooved edges for extra grip and the first 15-minutes are highlighted while the rest of the markings are darkened for a stealthy aesthetic. A flat sapphire crystal sits above the striking full-lume dial, when charged with light it glows brightly which is incredibly useful when diving or checking the watch at night. An angled minute chapter ring has printed obelisk indexes coloured in black with 12, 3, 6 and 9 indexes left unfilled framing the luminance, at 3 o’clock a day-date window. An orange minute hand and a black framed sword hour hand are infilled with luminance making them highly legible and complemented by an orange arrow point second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Citizen motif and at 6 o’clock a Promaster logo and “Automatic Divers 200m” are printed underneath. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with a pufferfish engraved in the centre, the watch is ISO-200 certified. Inside an automatic Citizen Cal. 8204, 21 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, this workhorse of a movement was first introduced in 1977 and has hand winding and hacking for your convenience. The watch comes fitted on its 20mm black PVD bracelet with a push-button release signed folding clasp and comes with its Citizen presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

We talk about value a lot at KibbleWatches and when we get a watch like this it in only makes us talk more about it... Even at full retail, I'd argue this watch is amazing and offers so much that many brands can't get close to for the price, so once on the secondary market like this it becomes an absolute steal and a brainer if you are a fan of this design.
