The Watch

Eterna was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland in 1856 by Josef Girard and Urs Schild. Jointly founding the famous ébauche factory. The company was formerly known as Schild Fréres, starting by producing ladies’ wristwatches, in 1905, the company changed its name to Eterna. In 1932, Eterna set up a subsidiary company, ETA SA, which made movements for itself and other Swiss watch companies. In 1948, Eterna created the advanced self-winding movement called the Eterna-Matic automatic, they used five ball bearings that were placed in such a way as to make the movement very efficient, its popularity was such that in 1948 Eterna adopted the image of five balls as its corporate logo. After 1982, Eterna was sold several times and in 1999, Eterna produced a range of watches marketed under the Porsche Design label. Porsche Design sold Eterna to International Volant Ltd, a subsidiary of China Haidian in June 2012, China Haidian was later renamed in 2014 to Citychamp Watch & Jewellery Group Limited where they continue to own Eterna.

Here we have a 2016 Eterna Heritage 1938 Chronograph with a 36mm square stainless steel case, this limited to 1938 pieces is part of their Heritage range first released in 2012 it takes its inspiration from the 1930s Art Deco period. Stepped lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 45mm and a case thickness of 13mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the square chronograph pushers and a large crown in the centre, polished and brushed surfaces transition with crisp edges. A thin brushed bezel holds a bevel-edged flat sapphire crystal AR coated above a matte black dial, and an outer minute track is precisely printed. Gilt-coloured Roman numeral indices mark the hours surrounding an inner 60-minute ring, at 3 o’clock a continuous second register intersects this inner ring and at 9 o’clock a 30-minute register does the same which creates a perfectly balanced vintage-inspired bicompax chronograph. Slender gilt-cloured sword hands complemented by a tapered chronograph hand and at 6 o’clock a framed date window, at 12 o’clock we have the Eterna motif. On the reverse, a snap-off case back, inside an automatic ETA 2894-2 movement, 37 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a leather strap and also comes switch its Eterna presentation box and paperwork.
