The Watch
Here we have a stunning 2014 IWC Portuguese Perpetual Calendar IW503202 with a 44mm 18ct Rose Gold round case that gently curves over your wrist thanks to the finely tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 52.5mm and a case thickness of 15mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we have a signed crown with deep knurling for grip. Brushed and polished surfaces transition with crisp lines. A smooth bezel holds a convex sapphire crystal AR coated on both sides for excellent viewing angles. The black dynamic dial has an outer minute track with small and large 18ct Rose gold pips surrounding Arabic numerals marking the hours; at 12 o’clock, we have the perpetual double moonphase for the southern and northern hemispheres; at 3 o’clock a date and 7-day power reserve register, at 6 o’clock a month register, between the 7 and 8 a for digit Year window and finally at 9 o’clock a day and small seconds register. Elegant 18ct Rose gold leaf hands sit majestically in the centre; inside the month register, we have the IWC motif completing this sophisticated Portugieser perpetual calendar timepiece. On the reverse, a screwed-down sapphire exhibition case back showcasing the incredible automatic IWC Cal. 51614, 62 jewels, beating at 21,600 Beats per hour; the skeletonised rotor has an 18ct gold medallion, fitted with Kurt Klaus' innovative perpetual calendar module and decorated in Côtes de Genève. It comes paired with its original IWC brown leather strap and 18ct Rose gold clasp, plus an additional unused black strap in the box. This watch is sold with the original IWC Box and Paperwork, including the 2024 IWC Service paperwork.
Personal Note
At 44mm this impressive IWC Portuguese Perpetual Calendar in 18ct Gold is no small watch, but it wears surprisingly well, even on my 7-inch wrist. Powered by the 7-day automatic IWC calibre 51614 which features the Perpetual Calendar module by the legend Kurt Klaus and is fresh from a full service with IWC which wasn't cheap but it is now running like a dream. If you are unsure on the size, book an appointment and try it on for yourself, but be warned, this is one impressive package, especially for the price!
The Brand
Florentine Aristo Jones founded IWC in 1868. In 1867, he applied for a European passport with the ambition to create watches using the American system of Watchmaking. This system was derived from the Federal Armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry. High-precision interchangeable parts were needed for armaments, and this was perfect for use in watchmaking. Florentine was a pioneer in introducing it to the Swiss. In 1868, Florentine and Charles Kidder ended up in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Originally called the company F. A Jones & Co, which was later changed to IWC International Watch Company. Florentine returned to the USA in 1876, where he retired and sadly passed away in 1916. His spirit carries on today in the modern IWC watches.
