The Watch

Hans Wilsdorf founded Rolex in 1905 at the age of 24, along with Alfred Davis in London. In 1919 they moved their operation to Geneva, Switzerland. This move was brought about by high wartime taxes on Gold and Silver in the UK after the Great war 1914-1918. They were now closer to their suppliers in Bienne.

Hans Wilsdorf, in 1945 introduced an aviation-inspired “Air” series. Many RAF pilots started buying these Chronometer timepieces for their accuracy and endurance. The models included Air-Giant, Air-Lion, and Air-Tiger. At the end of the war, Rolex released the “AIR-KING” in tribute to the pilots who flew at the Battle of Britain. In 1957 they released the Ref 5500 Air-King, which had a production run of 37 years. Rolex introduced the Air-King ref. 14000 in 1989 to replace the long-running Air-King ref. 5500. In 2007 they introduced Ref 114200, the first Air-King to be COSC certified. Rolex decided to discontinue the Air-King in 2014, replacing it with the Oyster Perpetual. This decision was later reversed in 2016 when they launched the ref 116900.

Here we have a 1999 Rolex Oyster Perpetual AirKing 14000 with a curvaceous 34mm stainless Oyster case. Tapered lugs with a lug to lug length of 42.5mm and a thickness of 11mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side is a signed crown. A flat polished bezel holds a sapphire crystal above a black dial. An outer minute track is precisely printed. Applied chamfered-edged batons mark the hours. Slender baton hands have luminance infill complemented by a tapered second hand. At 12 o’clock the applied Rolex crown, the text is executed in white with “Precision” at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a coin-edged screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Rolex Cal. 3135, 31 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. COSC Certified with a Parachrom hairspring, which has a  resistance to shocks and to temperature fluctuations. The watch comes fitted on its Rolex Oyster bracelet with a signed folding clasp and also comes with its Rolex presentation box and papers.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Rolex box and paperwork. The watch comes paired on its original Rolex signed bracelet with a signed folding clasp, the watch will fit up to a 7inch wrist. The watch is from November 1999 and is sold in worn condition, however, as you can see from the photos the watch is in very good condition for its age. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

It is incredible to see how much the Airking has changed over the years, in my personal opinion these 34mm OP Airkings are some of my favourites! Under the radar and still quintessential Rolex, that is what it's all about with these smaller cased oyster cases. Plus, the condition of this one is a real bonus, they are getting increasingly hard to find in fair and honest condition without being over polished or left looking like its been pulled through a blender.
