Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no originalĀ Seiko box orĀ Seiko papers. The watch comes paired on a very nice brown leather strap with gold plated buckle. The watch is from Circa. 1978 and is in worn, vintage condition as you can see from the photos. Overall, however, the watch is good for its age, and the dial is completely original and never touched. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

The Watch

Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) established in 1937. Seiko listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory becomes independent and forms Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959).

Seiko made these sample watches for their reps to showcase the latest watches to their jeweller customers. They commonly had a lower production number and it was clearly stamped on the case back as a ā€œSampleā€. They were also lent out to Seiko employees as customer relations showpieceā€™s and given back when a promotion or event had finished.Ā

This rare 36mm Seiko 7546-8039 Gold plated base metal round case has stubby straight lugs. A 41mm lug to lug length ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. Its slim profile has bevelled scalloped sides with crisp lines. A slim bezel holds a flat Hardlex crystal. The gold dial has vertical line patterning with faceted applied baton indexes marking the hours. An outer minute track with lume pips. At 3 oā€™clock a day-date window. Slim baton hands have lume infill. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with ā€œSampleā€ stamped into it along with the model and serial numbers. Inside a Seiko Quartz 7546 a quality Seiko movement. Fitted on an 18mm leather strap.

Personal Note

I've always enjoyed these fantastically affordable vintage Seiko Quartz watches, so when the opportunity presented itself to purchase this "Sample" piece I was definitely intrigued. Whilst nothing insane, it is very cool to know this watch was never truly intended to end up on a customers wrist, ideally to be kept within the brand and used for demonstrations for the boutiques and dealers, that's a fair bit of fun for not an awful lot of money...Ā
