The Watch

Cyma was founded in 1862 by the brother's Joseph Schwob and Theodore Schwob, in the town of Le Locle Switzerland. In 1871, Henri Sandoz established Sandoz & Cie in Le Locle. Sandoz moved to Tavannes in 1891, just North of Biel where he manufactured highly desirable repeaters and chronographs. Sandoz soon saw the potential of Cyma forming a business relationship with the Schwob brothers and Cyma was officially registered in 1903. In 1943, Cyma unveiled its first automatic wristwatch, endowed with a 420 caliber featuring a unidirectional rotor. In 1966 the company was bought by the ASUAG Chronos Holding and production continued under their Synchron group in 1968. Cyma became a sister company to Doxa and Ernest Borel throughout the 1970s. The company is currently owned by Stelux International Ltd, a Hong Kong holding firm that invests in jewellery and watches. When Cyma introduced the Navystar collection they had more than 20 international patents which included innovations in its ability to resist shocks such as immersion, under particularly demanding circumstances.

Here we have a classic 1955 CYMA Navystar Autorotor Automatic R480.The 35mm stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist with tapered lugs. A lug to lug length of 41.5mm and a thickness of 9.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side, a signed crown. The fine bezel holds a domed crystal above the dial with an even patina. Applied decorative dagger indexes mark the hours. Dauphine’s hands are complemented by a tapered sweeping seconds hand. At 12 o’clock the Cyma motif. Text is precisely printed. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside a Manually Wound CYMA Cal. R480, 27 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. The movement had a patented double-excenter winding and a jewel-bearing rotor. This made the movement thinner than a typical automatic. The movement was their last in-house self-winding movement and was manufactured between 1953 until 1955. The movement was so good that Longines used it in their  Longines Cal. 380. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm leather strap.
