Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original box and paperwork. The watch comes paired with a well-suited suede strap and also included is an 18mm period-correct stainless steel racing bracelet with a folding clasp. The watch is from September 1971 and is in worn, vintage condition, but overall very fair as you can see. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

The Watch

Nivada, a Swiss watch company, was founded in the town of Grenchen, Switzerland in 1879. They saw success after World War II, producing a series of watches. Nivada was unable to sell under their name in the United States after the threat of a name-similarity lawsuit by Movado. In 1958 in time for the International Geophysical Year, Nivada supported the US Navy “Operation Deep Freeze” they created a durable waterproof, anti-magnetic watch which they named “Antarctic”. 66 countries declared a year of science. With Admiral Byrd, the watch was worn and subjected to temperature fluctuations of 100 degrees above and 40 degrees below. It was dropped, hit, snowed on, and scraped on the ice, it never missed a beat. A testament to the ruggedness of the watch.

Our Nivada Antarctic Glacier has a 36.5mm stainless steel cushion case. At 10.5mm thickness and a lug to lug length of 40.5mm you can be sure of a comfortable fit. Radial brushing adds interest to the case. On the right side, a rare signed crown. Chamfered edges with rounded corners end with straight recessed lugs. A domed crystal sits above a blue patina dial with vertical brushing. The patina has created an interesting effect on the dial which you can see when you rotate your wrist. Applied stylised Roman numerals at 12, 6, and 9 mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window. Long steel baton hands complete this minimalist dial. At 12 o’clock an applied Nivada shield with Automatic underneath. At 6 o'clock the Antarctic Glacier is printed in white. On the reverse a screw-down case back with an embossed Antarctic Penguin. Inside an Automatic ETA 2472 with Nivada Rotor, 17 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. It is fitted on a well-suited suede strap and also comes with a period-correct 18mm stainless steel racing style bracelet with a folding clasp. The watch also comes with its original Nivada Antarctic presentation box, outer sleeve, and signed papers + some service records.

Personal Note

Nivada is a brand I've been speaking highly of for a while, they are massively underrated and offer a ton of value in the vintage world. Especially when we take a look at this full set example, stunning dial, and how rare to find it with all of that additional paperwork. I wouldn't hesitate on this if you are interested!
