The Watch

Henry Sandoz in 1870 founded Henri Sandoz & Cie. In 1890 in partnership with the Schwob brothers he established Cyma at Malleray near Tavannes, Switzerland. Brand names used during this time included Tavannnes-Cyma, Bijou Watch Co., Tacy Watch Co. and Lisca. Just before 1900, he took over the Odin factory in Bienne, Switzerland. In 1920 Hermann Sandoz joined his father renaming the business Henry Sandoz & Fils. Business continued to grow and in 1926 they opened a larger factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds. During the 1950s they marketed themselves as Sandoz of Switzerland.

Specialising in Ultra-thin watches during the 1950s. In 1955 the Cal.HSF 55 was the thinnest movement and again in 1959 the Cal. HSF 56 was the thinnest automatic movement. They continued through the 1970s becoming part of Societe Des Garde-Temps SA alongside brands like Elgin, Invicta and Waltham. Today Sandoz is split up into 4 separate brands, Sandoz Singapore, Sandoz Hong Kong, Sandoz Swiss, and Sandoz Spain.

Our Sandoz Polemaster has a 35mm Tonneau shaped case. The case gently curves over the lugs as a single piece of stainless steel. A lug to lug length of 45mm will ensure a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side, a signed crown. A domed crystal sits above a metallic Electric blue sunburst dial that shimmers in the light as you rotate your wrist. An outer minute track with square block applied indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window. Broad steel baton hands with a sweeping centre seconds hand. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the Sandoz shield in the centre. Inside a Swiss Automatic AS Cal. 1903. Fitted on a 20mm leather strap.

Personal Note

Blue dial watches are hot right now, but when you find a true vintage watch with such a vibrant blue, it truly is mesmerising. Whilst Sandoz my be a brand that not everyone hs heard of, it is a great brand and used quality movements as this one does. If you're in the market for a striking blue dial watch, you've found it.
