The Watch

Here we have a 2022 Timex Waterbury HODINKEE Limited Edition, which is their second collaboration with HODINKEE after the success of the Q Timex HODINKEE Limited Edition. It is the first dive watch to be added to the Waterbury collection. The 40mm stainless steel case curves over your wrist with tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 47mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm, ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side, a push/pull crown signed with the Waterbury Clock Company logo, harking back to their beginnings. The unidirectional aluminium bezel has knurling around its edge for extra grip and a black insert with baton markers and a lumed pip at 12 o’clock holding a domed mineral glass crystal above a textured black dial. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds rounded printed Arabic numerals at 3, 6 and 9 and batons in between marking the hours, slender baton hands infilled with Super-LumiNova complemented by a striking bright red second hand. At 12 o’clock, we have the Timex motif and “HODINKEE” Waterbury printed at 6 o’clock, complete with this vintage-inspired dive tool watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Miyota Cal. 8215, 21 jewels, beating at 21,600 beats per hour, this movement was first introduced in 1977. The watch comes fitted with its 20mm Timex leather strap with a signed buckle, and it comes with its Timex presentation box.

Personal Note

A fantastic release by Timex in collaboration with Hodinkee back in 2022, part of the Waterbury line and featuring the faint 'Hodinkee' name above, hardly noticeable in certain lights, and powered by the automatic Miyota 8215. This is a great watch for the price and feels more substantial and refined than most modern Timex watches. I would not hesitate to add this to your collection today!

The Brand

In 1854, the establishment of the Waterbury Clock Company emerged as a significant player in the horology industry. This company was at the forefront of clock and watch manufacturing, leading the way with groundbreaking innovations that included the use of brass gearing and modern assembly techniques, which greatly enhanced production efficiency and quality. The company's narrative took a dramatic turn during World War II when two Norwegian industrialists acquired it. Thomas Olsen, who was the owner of Fred. Olsen Shipping Co., along with Joakim Lehmkuhl. They fled Norway in 1940, alongside their families and a group of engineers escaping from the Nazis, finding refuge in America. This pivotal moment led to a strategic pivot for the company, as it transitioned towards producing fuse timers and precision components for the American military, adopting the new name United States Time Corporation. In 1941, the company adopted yet another name that would become synonymous with reliable timekeeping: Timex. Its headquarters are strategically located in Middlebury, Connecticut, USA. A remarkable milestone in Timex’s history occurred in 1933 with the introduction of the iconic Mickey Mouse watch. This whimsical timepiece captivated children worldwide and achieved remarkable sales of 2 million units. The 1950s marked the debut of the original Marlin watches, which quickly garnered acclaim for their design and functionality. Fast-forward to 1972, when Timex made a groundbreaking technological leap with the release of its first quartz watch, the Q-Timex. In 1984, Timex launched the Ironman, recognised as the world's first sports watch tailored for athletic enthusiasts. A significant advancement in user experience came in 1992 with the introduction of the Indiglo night light, a feature that revolutionised how people interacted with their watches in low-light conditions. In 1993, Timex rekindled its collaboration with Disney, creating the charming Disney Classics Collection, a line of character-themed watches that delighted fans of all ages. In 2007, Timex Group B.V., a Dutch holding company, made a strategic acquisition by purchasing the renowned Italian design studio Giorgio Galli Design Lab. The following year, in 2008, the company was fully integrated into Timex Group B.V. and was rebranded as Timex Group USA. Today, Timex continues to thrive, with its products being manufactured in the Far East and Switzerland, reflecting a blend of tradition and modernity in the world of timekeeping.
