Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Squale Box & Paperwork. The watch comes paired on its original black rubber strap with a signed Squale buckle. The watch is from September 2021 and is sold in worn condition, but overall very fair condition as you can see, one the lugs has gone some marks. The watch comes with its original manufacturer warranty.

The Watch

Squale was founded by Charles von Büren in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1946 as a manufacturer of watchcases and other components for other watch brands. In 1950 von Buren began to produce professional dive watches under the Squale name. During the 1960s and 70s, Squale produced cases for many brands including Prima, Blandford, Deman Watch, Berio, and Sinn. In 1974 Squale decided to enter the watch market in their own right. Unfortunately like many other watch brands during the “quartz crisis” they stopped production in 1989. Relaunching the brand in 2010 the Maggi family who were previously distributors of von Buren and Squale watches in Italy. Their headquarters can be found in Milan, with watch production in Grenchen in the Jura valley Switzerland.

Taking inspiration from the long heritage of their dive watches, this 2021 Squale 50 ATMOS Scuba Gnomon Limited Edition is Limited to 200 pieces which ours is number 60. The 42mm polished and brushed stainless steel case curves over your wrist towards the thick flat-ended lugs. A lug to lug length of 48.5mm and a case thickness of 13mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. At 4 o’clock a screw-down signed crown is recessed for protection. The bezel is true to its heritage and was first seen on the Blancpain’s Bundeswehr Kampfschwimmer mil-spec bund diver. Specifically made for the German Navy Combat divers at 12 o’clock an inverted triangle which they used for timing purposes, its matte black insert was also a requirement. A flat sapphire crystal sits above a matte black dial. Large baton indexes are coated in SuperLuminova marking the hours. Broad baton hands with orange outlined minute hand filled with SuperLuminova complemented by a sweeping second hand with counterweight coated in SuperLuminova. On the dial is a unique ‘diver-down’ sign, a prominent logo commonly associated with Scuba diving. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Squale logo and Professional engraved into the center. On the outer edge, you find the number out of 200 which ours is number 60. Inside an Automatic ETA 2824-2/Sellita SW200-1. The watch comes fitted on its Squale 20mm rubber strap with a signed buckle and comes with its Squale presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

Squale really has a fantastic history that I feel a lot of people are not very aware of, so when this watch came out I was all for it, such a great design with roots back to their heritage, all packaged in a well proportioned and easy to wear case. If you have been considering trying out a Squale I wouldn't hesitate with this one!
