The Watch
Here we have a 2021 Seiko Prospex Solar 'Tuna' on Bracelet 47mm SNE497J1. The 47mm case is made up of a stainless steel inner case protected by a black shroud giving it its nickname of “Tuna Can” with four screws. At 4 o’clock, there is a crown with knurling for grip. The unidirectional bezel is easily adjusted between the openings of the protective case surround. The 60-minute dive insert has the first 15-minute numerals and markings in Lumibrite. A flat Hardlex crystal sits above a matte black dial. An outer minute chapter ring is precisely printed. The applied disc and triangle at 12 o’clock are coated in LumiBrite, marking the hours. At 4.30 we have a day date. The sword and arrow hands are complemented by a Lumibrite second hand. At 12 o’clock, an applied Seiko and at 6 o’clock, Prospex motif “Solar” and “Divers200m” in white paint complete this rugged dive watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside a Solar Quartz Seiko Cal. V157. It comes paired with a Seiko 22mm brushed stainless steel bracelet secured by a signed folding clasp, and the watch also comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
The Seiko 'Tuna' is undoubtedly one of the toughest dive watches Seiko produce, add to that a steel bracelet and a solar-powered movement, and you've got yourself this ridiculously tough SNE497J1. This thing could easily survive anything you throw at it and would be the perfect holiday watch, especially if you take a rubber strap and switch and swap between that and the bracelet. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!
The Brand
Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892, Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924, the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956, Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph mono-pusher. Not stopping there, Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217, which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
