The Watch

Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches and many more.

Here we have a 2021 Seiko Alpinist 'Ginza' 140th Anniversary SPB259J1 commemorates 140 years since Seiko's beginnings as a watch and clock repair shop in Ginza, Tokyo in Japan. The 38.5mm polished and brushed stainless steel case tapers towards the lugs. A lug to lug length of 19mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. Its shape and design are inspired by the Alpinist line. A brushed and polished smooth bezel holds a  curved sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside. The striking blue dial has a pattern inspired by the first stone paving areas seen in Ginza hence the same. Applied baton and triangular indexes coated in LumiBrite mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Elegant dauphine hands are coated in the same luminance complemented by a pale blue sweeping second hand. Text is precisely applied to the dial with the Prospex logo at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back with Limited Edition printed on to it. Inside an Automatic Seiko Cal. 6R35, 24 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a 19mm Seiko brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding clasp. The watch also comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.

Personal Note

Such a great-looking watch from Seiko and one I intend to nickname the "Spiderman" as the dial really reminds me of Spiderman, anyone else? The bracelet quality feels a step above what Seiko usually produces at this price point, the screw-down crown is a great touch, all round this is a fantastic release and I can see why it has been such a big hit among collectors!
