The Watch

CWC (Cabot Watch Company) was founded by Mr. Ray Mellor in 1972. He was formerly Contracts director of Hamilton Watch. He quickly secured contracts to supply the British MOD and has supplied them with many thousands of watches. In 1996 on Ray’s retirement he sold the company to Silvermans Ltd who sold CWC watches to the public, since that time and due to the increased costs of producing watches in Switzerland, the British MOD requirements of buying cheap has meant they have ceased using Silvermans. Inspired by the quartz version made for the Royal Marines SBS, formed at the height of WW2 The Special Boat Service is the maritime elite counter-terrorism unit of the Royal Navy.

Our CWC G10 "Fat Boy" Military Watch was the first quartz watch to be issued to the British Armed Forces. It was produced from 1980 until 1983, its 13mm girth was thanks to the ESA 536.121 Quartz movement giving it its nickname “Fat Boy”. The 35mm brushed stainless steel case has stubby lugs with a lug to lug length of 41.5mm and a thickness of 13mm. On the right side a crown with crown guards. The domed crystal sits above a matte black dial. An outer minute track has Tritium pips and batons. Arabic numerals are painted in white marking the hours. Slim sword hands are coated in Tritium with a tapered center seconds hand. At 12 o’clock a CWC logo and a circled “T” indicated Tritium.  At 6 o’clock “Quartz" painted in white. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the reference codes: W10 British Army. The 13 digit number is the NATO Stock Number (NSN). 66 refers to Instruments and Laboratory equipment and the 45 refines that to Time Measuring Instrument. The next 9 digit number makes up the NATO Item Identification Number (NIIN). 5415317 refers specifically to the CWC quartz-powered general service issue watch. The final two digits refer to the date of issue, this one was issued in 1982. It was at this time 2nd April 1982 until 14th April 1982 that Britain was at war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. The watch comes fitted on a NATO strap.

Personal Note

Some of the final "accessible" military watches left on the market, but even these have seen sharp increases in prices over the years, especially for this desirable "Fat Boy" reference. So much so that this sold before it even landed on the website.
