The Watch

The Swiss watch company Tissot from Le Locle, Switzerland, was established in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. Under Charles-Emile’s direction, they manufactured pocket watches with parts from Russia and the United States. In 1915, the company began producing wrist watches. Between 1920 and 1977, Tissot produced its own movements. In 1930 to survive the 1929 crash and economic crisis they entered into an agreement with Omega to form the SSIH Group which 53 years later became the Swatch Group.

Here we have a 1972 Tissot Big Seastar Date 44628-1 with a 37mm stainless steel case. The thin straight lugs have a lug to lug length of 43mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side is a recessed signed crown. The thin smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above the silver and blue dial. The outer minute chapter ring has applied baton indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. A long minute hand hits its mark while the shorter hour hand has a flat end both have a strip of luminance. Complemented by a tapered second hand. At 12 o’clock we have an applied Tissot motif with Tissot Swiss printed underneath. At 6 o’clock we have Automatic Seastar with an applied star just below. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Tissot Cal. 784-2, 21 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. This movement was manufactured from 1967 until 1972. The watch comes fitted on a well-suited 18mm leather strap.

Personal Note

The moment I saw this watch I had to own it and bring it to the site, unfortunately, it needed some work mechanically so it has taken a little while, but now it is here and it looks amazing! This really is one of those hidden gems, if it has a different name on the dial I suspect it could demand much more, thankfully for us watch collectors it doesn't and we can get a ton of vintage watch for this kind of money!
