The Watch

Founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacot at 22 in Le Locle Switzerland. In November 1999 they were purchased by LVMH Group joining brands like TAG Heuer and Hublot. They continue to manufacture their own in-house movements. The Zenith logo changed to the square on the dial, crown and buckle around 1971 up until 2000 when the 5 pointed star with "Z" in the centre made a return. Over the years Zenith has won over 2300 awards for precision.

Our 1970 Zenith Chronograph has a 41mm black PVD coated stainless steel tonneau case, Its curved profile overlaps the spring bars for a very sleek design. The stainless steel (non-PVD) pushers and crown on the right side are a nice contrast to the stealthy case. A bevelled bezel holds a flat crystal. Its matt black dial has a raised outer edge with the Tachymeter chapter ring clearly printed. The inner dial has slim batons marking the hours. At 3 o'clock a 30-minute register, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour register and finally at 9 o'clock a 60 continuous seconds register. Slim steel baton hands with the chronograph hand complete the dial. All evenly spaced creating great symmetry. On the reverse, a plain stainless steel screw-down case back. Inside a Manually Wound Zenith cal. 146-HP one of the last manually wound chronograph movements Zenith made. The "HP'' stood for the 3 register chronograph designation. "DP" was the 2 register chronograph of the same caliber. The excellent chronograph calibre 146-HP was built from the same Martel components as Universal Genève movements of the 60s. By 1960 Zenith had purchased Martel outright along with its production facility in Pont de Martel Switzerland. The very same facility wherein 1965 the first prototypes of the El Primero were produced. Fitted on a 19mm black PVD bracelet with folding clasp.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no original Zenith box or original Zenith paperwork. The watch comes paired with a vintage 19mm black PVD bracelet, we are unsure if this is the original as it is not signed Zenith, but it is a period-correct 19mm black PVD bracelet which wouldn't be easy to find. The watch is from Circa. 1970s and is in worn, vintage condition as you can see from the photos, with some signs of wear to the PVD and some marks to the watch. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

For those who know me, they will know I have a serious love affair for vintage Zenith, owning multiple and always sourcing them for the website! This one I could not pass on, no matter what. It is such a great looking watch and better than most of the 70s all black Chronos of the time as this is actually a manually wound Zenith caliber, making it far more unique and interesting in my opinion. Plus, as people know, I really believe we are going to see Zenith going up a fair bit as collectors figure out just how great Zenith is.
