The Watch

Here we have a 1970s Mondaine Diver with an unusual 38mm oval stainless steel case that subtly curves and sits comfortably on your wrist thanks to the shouldered lugs, and the lug-to-lug length is 46mm, and the case thickness is 12.8mm. On the right side a coin-edged domed crown. The bidirectional stainless steel bezel has knurling for grip, and its original bakelite 60-minute dive insert holds a domed acrylic crystal above a matte black dial. An outer minute track surrounds Tritium plots and polished indexes infilled with Tritium marking the hours; at 6 o’clock, a “Roulette” red Arabic numerals on a white date window is seen through a cyclops magnification on the underside of the crystal. Steel arrow and baton hands filled with Tritium are complemented by a sweeping second hand counterweighted by a tritium-filled rectangle; at 12 o’clock, we have the Mondaine motif. On the reverse, a screw-down case back engraved with the details of the watch, inside an automatic ETA 2783, 25 jewels, beating at a respectable 21,600 beats per hour; this quality movement has a quick-set date. It comes paired with a well-suited 19mm leather strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

There will always be something amazing about a vintage skin diver on the wrist, especially one like this Mondaine with its unique oval case shape and original bakelite bezel, all perfectly matched with the bold dial and handset, this is one unique vintage watch. The subtle details are what bring this model to life, with the reverse cyclops on the crystal to magnify the date, the block indices and all powered by an automatic ETA 2783. I would not sleep on this one, I doubt another will come my way anytime soon!

The Brand
