The Watch

The Schlup & Co. watch factory was founded by the brother's Fritz, Ernst, and Werner in 1917. Using a spare room in their parent’s house in Lengnau, Switzerland, they quickly became one of the world's largest producers of watch movements. The first time they used the brand name Rado was in the 1950s. By the end of the decade, they had a presence in over 61 countries. Over the years they have innovated and created many distinctive designs, building a reputation of durability and reliability.

Here we have a Rado Starliner created at a time when everyone was fascinated with everything space-related. A 36mm stainless steel round case. Tapered lugs with beveled edges have a lug to lug length of 43mm and a thickness of 12.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side is a large crown with a coin edge for easy adjustment. The wide concave bezel is quite unusual, making it stand out from the crowd, with the domed crystal sitting proud. Its silver sunburst dial has applied faceted baton indexes marking the hours. Steel dauphine hands and a fine seconds hand complete the dial. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. At 12 o’clock an applied Rado logo and at 6 o’clock the model name “Starliner”. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with “Rado Water Sealed” and two seahorses embossed on it. Inside an automatic AS Cal. 1700/01, 18,000 beats per hour. Fitted on a 19mm leather strap.

Personal Note

The bezel is the star of the show here, what a funky design and it really captures the light incredibly! The dial is evenly patina'd to a warm egg-shell tone, which really suits the overall look and vintage feel in my opinion.
