The Watch
Here we have a 2019 Seiko Prospex 1968 Re-Interpretation SPB079J1 that is inspired by the Seiko 1968 200m diver with a contemporary twist, the 43.5mm stainless steel case has angular edges with Zaratsu brushing and polishing transitioning along crisp lines, coated in DiaShield, a Seiko proprietary material, gives the watch resilience to scratches and scuffs. The drilled lugs have a lug-to-lug length of 50mm and a thickness of 13mm for an impressive wrist presence. On the right side at 4 o’clock is a screw-down crown. The 120-click unidirectional bezel has a fine coin edge for extra grip, the blue 60-minute insert has silver numerals. A slightly domed sapphire crystal AR coated sits above a matte black dial. An outer minute chapter ring surrounds the applied disc and obelisk indexes filled with LumiBrite mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window. Broad sword and arrow hands with LumiBrite infill are complemented by a sweeping second hand. Text is precisely printed, Seiko at 12 o’clock, Prospex logo and “Automatic Divers 200m” at 6 o’clock complete this vintage-inspired rugged tool watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the Seiko Tsunami in the centre, inside an automatic Seiko 6R15, 23 jewels, and 21,600 beats per hour, the movement has hand winding and hacking functionality for your convenience. The watch comes paired with its original 3-link 20mm Seiko stainless steel bracelet and signed folding deployant clasp, all links are provided and comes with its Seiko presentation box and papers.
Personal Note
Here we have the Seiko Prospex 1968 Re-Interpretation, reference SPB079J1, featuring the most alluring metallic blue glossy bezel which really adds another layer of intrigue to this already incredible reference. I would highly recommend considering this watch for your collection if you are after a reliable and solid diver, but with that little extra flare!
The Brand
Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established by making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
