The Watch

Here we have a 2022 Seiko Presage SARX029 "Urushi" Dial Automatic with a 40.5mm polished stainless steel case that gently curves over your wrist with satin brushed tapered twisted lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 47mm and a case thickness of 12mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed push/pull crown. The smooth polished crystal holds a domed sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside above a stunning handmade black ”Urushi” lacquer dial. An outer minute track is precisely executed surrounding white Roman numeral indices marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a painted gold framed colour-matched date window, and elegant gold leaf hands are complemented by a crescent moon weighted gold sweeping second hand. At noon we have the Seiko motif and at 6 o’clock “Automatic 23 Jewels” completes this sophisticated dress watch. On the reverse is a screw-down exhibition case back with the details of the watch around its edge, showcasing the automatic Seiko Cal. 6R15, 23 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, this workhorse movement has hacking and hand winding and a quick set date for your convenience. The watch comes paired with its 20mm black leather strap with a signed deployment clasp, and the watch comes with its Seiko presentation box, swing tags and paperwork.

Personal Note

This Seiko Presage SARX029 features a wonderful "Urushi" lacquered dial which is mesmerising in the metal and offers something that you rarely see at this price point, the contrast of the gold and white works beautifully too and all is housed in a very wearable 40.5mm that is comfortable on the wrist. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your personal collection if you are after something that makes you stop and take a closer look.

The Brand

Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
